We Blog: costume vs. fashion jewelry

scan0002.jpgWhat makes a successful blog?

You need a theme:  beads of all kinds.

Is that all?  No.

You need variations on the theme.

That’s not enough!  What do you need to make a successful blog?

You need an opinion.

Just one opinion?  That won’t make a successful blog.

You need a whole lot of opinions.

But how do you get a whole lot of opinions on a theme and its variations?

You ask.  Just ask.

This blog’s theme is beads and its variations will play out in future days.  You have an opinion.  Share it with everybody.  Your opinion might even be a variation on the theme.

Here comes a question:  and you thought you were done with questions.   How do you define costume jewelry and how does that differ from fashion jewelry?

  1. Good ole Coco Chanel: it was she who brought in jewelry to accent her clothing designs, her costumes. Costume jewelry was born. Made of less expensive materials (base metals instead of gold, silver, or platinum; synthetic gems to replace ‘the real thing’), this jewelry was made to complement the clothing costumes she had designed. Today multiple strands of chains, and quilted handbags with chain straps are easily identified as Chanel.

The costumes being created by Chanel were meant for the elite: the people who could not afford her clothing emulated her style but at a fraction of the cost. It is still a practice to view a designer’s latest collection, make some sketches and have a manufacturer quickly make less detailed finishing and less costly fabrics to appear in the shops within days of it appearing on a Milan or Paris or New York runway.

As people bought and wore these less expensive reproductions, they also wanted a less costly reproduction of the costume jewelry. Thus fashion jewelry was born.

The end result is that fashion jewelry and costume jewelry has become the same thing. It is jewelry made of glass beads instead of rubies and other gems. Crystal became an important component. Instead of precious metals base metals in gold or silver colors are used.

There is a significant place for handmade, unique glass bead jewelry in today’s fashion market. This glass bead jewelry competes with chains and charms.

Fashion / costume jewelry holds an important place in a person’s wardrobe today.

  2. ^ i totally agree with you.

    • It is fantastic that costume and fashion jewellery has become far more accepted of late. When it comes to fashion the majority of us follow the celebrities, and to see them endorse costume jewellery is great news for everyone. Don’t get me wrong, I still think there’s a place in every girl’s jewellery box for a string or pearls and a diamond ring, but now we have the freedom to experiment with colours and styles more because wholesale fashion jewellery is so widely available.

      • Thank you so much for finding my modest blog and responding to my article. Sometimes it feels like I’m shouting in the dark and there’s nobody to hear so this bit of validation is most welcome.
